Is getting dermal fillers painful?

The short answer is, most of the time, no. But since this is a question we get asked a lot, we’ve decided to write a more in-depth article about what you can expect when getting dermal fillers in Scottsdale, and we will also answer a handful of other commonly asked questions about dermal and lip fillers.

At BabyFace Medspa in Scottsdale, Arizona, dermal fillers are one of our most popular services. The wide variety of improvements these cosmetic injectables have to rejuvenate the face is quite impressive, so it’s no wonder why they are so popular.

As we will discuss in this article, dermal fillers aren’t just for filling in lines and wrinkles; they can also help sculpt cheekbones, plump lips, minimize acne scars and create a more chiseled or smoother jawline.  Even temples can be filled out with dermal fillers.

We have extensive experience with a wide range of FDA-approved dermal fillers. Although some are very similar, they all have different unique qualities so they are used for different areas of the face. We believe that using the best filler for each area of treatment is the secret to achieving the softest, most natural, and beautiful look possible. Does it hurt to get lip fillers?

Typically these treatments are very tolerable. This greatly depends on the experience and technique of the person performing the injection. At BabyFace, we use many measures and techniques to minimize discomfort, i.e. ice, topical numbing agents, ice, vibrating devices, and other measures that have proven helpful. In addition, all fillers on the market today contain lidocaine to reduce any discomfort.  Most patients say “that wasn’t bad at all!”

We have often found a person’s anxiety around lip injections causes them to feel discomfort more than others. Relax. We make this easy and as pain-free as possible. At BabyFace our goal is to provide a private, seamless experience that you will want to return to again and again.

When did dermal fillers start?

Dermal fillers ushered in an exciting new age of anti-aging aesthetic treatments. The aging process is not only characterized by gravity affecting tissues and ligaments under the skin, but also the progressive loss of bone, muscle, and fat underneath the skin. This results in a loss of youthful volume, sagging skin, and loss of jawline definition.

In 1996 Restylane was approved as the first cosmetically acceptable "injectable filler" authorized by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Within the next few years, other dermal fillers entered the market, Juvederm, Perlane, and Radiesse.

Since then, many products have hit the market, giving practitioners a wide array of choices for their patients.  These include Sculptra, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Defyne, Restylane Refyne, Contour, Bellafill, Belotero Balance, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Juvederm Voluma, Juvederm Vollure, Juvederm Volbella, Revanesse Versa and Revanesse Lips.

myths about lip fillers in Scottsdale AZ

Each FDA-approved product has its benefits and advantages. Sometimes this can be confusing for the patient on what filler they need.  That’s why our consults are so important to help patients understand the differences in products used and decide what is best for them.

BabyFace Medspa in Scottsdale, AZ is home to a team of medical professionals with extensive experience and training in dermal fillers.  All our nurses have trained other medical professionals in these procedures.  Dermal fillers can help decrease wrinkles and facial creases, diminish acne scars, enhance receding chins and define a sharper jawline. We are known for bringing a soft natural look to our patients, which they love us for as evidenced by all of the kind words on our TESTIMONIALS page ;-)

What Are Dermal Fillers and How Do Dermal Fillers work?

Most patients just want to subtly enhance and rejuvenate the face. Whether they want smoother lips or reduce vertical lip lines, dermal fillers may be the perfect solution you’re after! It is common for dermal fillers to be injected directly into smile lines, corners of the mouth, nasolabial folds, cheeks, jawline, and even neck wrinkles. The results may be dramatic. Fillers are a simple and relatively painless procedure that requires minimal recovery time. Some bruising and minor swelling is temporary so we ask our patients to schedule our treatments around their busy schedules.

When Getting a Filler, What Should I Be Prepared for?

An injection of dermal fillers into the face takes about 45-60 minutes and requires photos, consent to be signed, and a review of post-treatment instructions. Many people ask, “how long do dermal fillers last?”  The length of the results varies from person to person, based on skin laxity, age, metabolism, and lifestyle factors like sun exposure.  During our consultation, we listen to each patient’s desires and how they want to look.  These are not cookie-cutter treatments!

Today's Fillers

The growth and popularity of dermal filler treatments have exploded since their introduction because they are safe, relatively painless, and produce amazing results. In December 2013, there was encouraging news for the almost 2 million patients who underwent dermal filler treatments in 2012.

According to the American Society for Gynecologic Surgery, in 2012 there were 2,000,000 patients who used Juvederm, Restylane, and other fillers, showing a growth of 205% since 2000. The demand for these fillers has grown by 110% since 2010.  These are not typos!

While Scottsdale BOTOX and other neuromodulators are not a dermal filler, it too has seen a 115 % spike in popularity. Facelifts, on the other hand, witnessed a 20% rise during the same period.

These treatments have now become mainstream in the field of aesthetics.

Choosing the best lip fillers in Scottsdale

Most of our patients do NOT want the big lips trend that started 5-10 years ago. One of the most famous trends in recent years was born in Los Angeles, the home of Hollywood's most dazzling stars. It's no surprise that lip augmentation procedures were refined in L.A., where they were first developed.

Our most requested treatment is to have SMOOTHER lips, not necessarily bigger. That is why your personal complimentary consultation at BabyFace Medspa in Scottsdale will help you choose the best Scottsdale lip filler treatment option for you.

Dermal Fillers are often used to treat acne scars!

Dermal fillers can also help minimize the appearance of acne scars and can help reduce the factors that are known to trigger the development of acne.  Dermal fillers can reduce the appearance of acne scars by helping to smooth or fill the skin's surface.

The Hyaluronic acid contained within dermal fillers can help reduce redness and the visible appearance of acne. Furthermore, we also have skincare products that help control sebum, which is often what causes too much oil and buildup on the skin which leads to acne.

Extensive Non-Surgical Chin Enhancement

A lack of power and definition in the chin, sometimes known as a "weak chin," may distract from an otherwise appealing appearance. A "chiseled chin" is often seen as a more elegant and confident appearance in both men and women. Dermal fillers are a popular solution to provide a more pronounced chin resulting in facial symmetry and balance. The price of dermal fillers is a fraction of standard surgery, but the benefits are rapid and there are few adverse effects. Dermal fillers are a great start to ensure this is the look you desire as they are a temporary solution that lasts up to 6 months.

Enhancement of the Cheeks and Jowls Without Surgical Intervention

During the normal aging process, the cheek region loses volume and the jowls droop as a result. Traditionally, surgery is used to treat both of these issues. And both may be physically and financially draining, requiring weeks of recuperation and a significant financial investment.

However, dermal fillers are a great alternative solution to surgery. Filling in the cheeks and chin region is an effective way to hide jowls, define the jawline and restore facial volume.

Do dermal fillers have adverse reactions?

Swelling and bruising may linger for up to seven days or more depending on the person.  Those taking aspirin, NSAIDs, fish oil, and other blood-thinning agents tend to bruise more than others.  Over-the-counter arnica helps to reduce bruising and we have this available for our patients.

Because the molecular structure of Hyaluronic Acid fillers is similar to our tissue, reactions to these treatments are very rare.
