Not All Omega-3s Are the Same
The main types of omega-3s are ALA, EPA, and DHA.
Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is found mostly in plant oils, flax and chia seeds, leafy greens, and walnuts. It is called an “essential” fat that cannot be produced by the body and must be obtained through the diet.

While severe cases of elevated triglycerides are often managed with prescription-strength, purified EPA protocols by a physician, clinical nutrition research consistently demonstrates that dietary and supplemental omega-3s play a powerful role in baseline heart health. It is worth noting that these benefits are most established in individuals looking to optimize their lipid profiles or support existing cardiovascular health alongside a balanced diet, rather than shifting total cholesterol or LDL on their own.
Inflammation. EPA and DHA help the body resolve inflammation, not just suppress it. They're precursors to signaling molecules that actively promote the resolution of inflammation. Higher omega-3 status is generally associated with lower levels of several inflammatory markers. What Research Doesn't Fully Support
The evidence for supplementation reversing cognitive decline, resolving depression as a standalone treatment, or producing meaningful weight loss is weak. The biggest benefits of increasing omega-3 intake show up in people who are starting from a deficit — and that's most of us in the U.S.
Some researchers suggest that a higher intake of omega-6 fats compared with omega-3 fats (also referred to as the omega-6/omega-3 ratio) could contribute to the development of chronic health conditions, like cardiovascular disease and cancer, but this is not supported by evidence in humans.
The typical Western diet has an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio estimated at 15:1 or higher, far above estimates for ancestral diets. Still, this ratio is not a reliable measure of how healthy a food or an overall diet is.
